Ancient Olympia

Ancient Olympia Ilia Rooms

Ancient Olympia (which is the today's town name) is built between hills, in the valley of Alfeios river and is just 22km away from the capital city of the district of Ilia. Because of its history, Ancient Olympia attracts many visitors, not only from Greece but also from countries from across the globe. Its museum is full of exhibits, and the statue of Praxiteles' Hermes is one of them.
The first excavation in the area took place in 1829 by the French Scientific Expedition in Peloponnese, when part of Zeus temple and parts of its decorations were discovered, many of which were transferred in the Louvre.
